Ninety Mile Beach runs along the western coast of the Northland peninsula. Despite the name, it actually spans 55 miles (88.5 kilometers). Rental cars are strictly prohibited from driving on the sand due to the risk of sinking into quicksand or getting caught by incoming tides.
